MSc in Agricultural Economics (University of Hohenheim, 1970); PhD in economics (1974); 1979-1987 Associate Professor and Professor of Agricultural Economics and Operations Research, University of Kiel; 1987 Professor, University of Hohenheim; since 1990 Professor and Chair, University of Bonn.

Research visits

1977/78 Stanford University (Dept. of Operations Research) and Harvard Business School; 1978/79 Kenya MoA as member of the "Harvard Institute for International Development" (HIID); 1993/94 Stanford University (Food Research Institute); further extended visits to universities in Sweden, Trinidad, Brazil and the US, 2002/03, University of Florida, Department of Food and Resource Economics, Gainesville, FL, USA.

Further activities

1979-83 founding member of an agribusiness consulting and software company since 1985 CEO of a non-profit research enterprise for international development; 1989-91 chairman of the German national association for informatics in agribusiness; 1992-96 editor; Journal for Agricultural Informatics (in German); 1996-97 founding president of the "European Federation for Information Technology in Agriculture, Food and the Environment (EFITA)".

Research focus

Agribusiness, food industry, agri-food supply chains, service institutions in the agri-food sector.

Research interests

Business management concepts; quality and environmental management; executive information and support systems; organization, process management, and process control in enterprises and agri-food supply chains; electronic commerce.
